Adoption

This week, John and Chuck are back with the series on Salvation in Full Color, looking at a sermon on adoption by John Tennent.

John Tennent (1707—1732) was the son of William Tennent, who founded Log College which is now Princeton University.

John Tennent was born in Ireland and was educated in America in the Log College. His conviction of sin was unusually deep and intense, bringing him sometimes almost to despair. But his conversion was a remarkable experience of inexpressible joy and abiding consolation. Distinguished for piety and consecrated zeal in his Christian life, he was a modest, gentle, humble young man; yet he proved to be a powerfully effective preacher. Tennent preached faithfully to his congregation for two short years before he was taken to be with the Lord at just 26 years old.

  1. Adoption is a Great and Honorable Gift

  2. Adoption is a Gift Given by God

  3. Only Believers are Adopted

  4. The Cause of Adoption is God’s Love

“From what to what has God brought believers? From what a deep degree of extreme misery to what a height of dignity and glory? O, let us call to the admiration of our souls to all that is within us this blessed love, this free and undeserved love, this enriching and everlasting love! Did the angels wonder when they brought the happy tidings of this love to our world? Did they look with admiration into these things? And will not our souls?”

God’s adoptive love is complacent—meaning it is at rest. God is not looking to us, watching and waiting for reasons to love us. He requires nothing of us because He looks at us through the Son with complete satisfaction.

We hope you’ll join us as we read and study Salvation in Full Color together.
