Repentance

This week, John and Chuck are looking at a sermon on repentance by Samuel Davies in the book, Salvation in Full Color.

Samuel Davies is considered by some to be the greatest preacher that America has ever produced. He was able to take great, complex truths and explain them in a way that is clear and understandable. It is deep, yet simple.

Many were converted under Davies’ preaching. He died at just 36 years of age. His sermon on repentance covers the following points:

  1. Repentance extends to the heart, as well as to the practice.

  2. Repentance includes a deep sense of the evil of sin and sorrow for it because it is against God.

  3. Repentance extends to all known sins without exception.

  4. Repentance always includes reformation.

  5. Repentance implies a believing application to God for pardon only through Jesus Christ.

All of mankind must repent and this calling is urgent. You may think, “Yes, but later.” You may want to live for yourself and “have fun” now. But the door is open now! Now is the time to repent.

God is a holy God and He calls us to Himself. We can only turn TO GOD—in faith through Christ—if we turn AWAY FROM sin.

Not every expression of sorrow for sin is repentance. You may feel sorrow you were caught in your sin or that others think less of you because of it. Your sorrow may have nothing to do with hating the sin itself or hating that it grieved God. Is Christ simply your “pack mule” to carry you and your favorite sins to heaven?

True repentance includes a real understanding of sin. Sin is against God and robs Him of His glory. If you love God, this should break your heart.

“Repent, you must either in time or eternity, upon earth, or in hell. You cannot possibly avoid it. The question is not, Shall I repent? for that is beyond a doubt. But the question is, “Shall I repent now when it may reform and save me; or shall I put it off to the eternal world, when my repentance will be my punishment, and can answer no end but to torment me?” And is this a hard question? Does not common sense determine it in favour of the present time? Therefore, let the duty be as extensively observed as it is commanded: Let all men everywhere repent.”
