How to Use the Means of Grace in Family Worship

In A Practical Guide to Family Worship, Ryan Bush offers 4 ways we can use the means of grace in our times of family worship.

The primacy and sufficiency of Scripture have important implications in Family Worship.

  1. The Bible should be given the place of priority during times of Family Worship. Do not allow preferences to push you to give the Bible less and less prominence in your gatherings.

  2. Be very careful about what songs you sing in Family Worship. Choose songs saturated with Scripture, theologically clear, and procured from healthy sources.

  3. Let the Scriptures fill out your prayers. Use both prewritten prayers as well as extemporaneous prayers.

  4. Finally, endeavor to bring as little as possible to the Family Worship gathering. Resist the temptation to introduce more and more elements into Family Worship in an attempt to make it more exciting or interesting. Be content with the simple elements of reading, singing, and praying the Scriptures.

Keep the Scriptures as the central element of Family Worship because it is God’s Word. God’s Word is what your little flock needs for the nourishment of their souls (to say nothing of your own soul). If you are to be a faithful watcher of souls, you must nourish them with God’s Word.
